Treating excess sebum

Contrary to popular belief, oily skin doesn't only affect teenagers! Imperfections, dilated pores, blackheads, shine... Hyperseborrhea, i.e. excess sebum, can pose aesthetic problems. At Maison Lutétia, we offer treatments to clear blemishes and restore healthy clear skin.

How to define oily skin?

Oily skin is caused by excess sebum, which gives it an oily appearance. The pores are open, the skin texture uneven and the skin appears thick. This excess sebum promotes the appearance of blackheads, microcysts and acne. The hydrolipidic film of oily skin being particularly efficient, it is preserved from drying out and less prone to signs of aging.

Sebum, what is it and what is it used for?

It is a natural substance secreted by the sebaceous glands in the skin and scalp, in the form of a greasy film. This lipid layer is essential for maintaining hydration, protecting the skin from external aggressions and providing it with antioxidants.

The production of sebum being influenced by hormones, it increases during adolescence or pregnancy. When it is produced in too large quantities, we speak of hyperseborrhoea, the cause of many imperfections, such as blackheads and acne. Excess sebum affects combination to oily skin, women and men, at all ages!

The consequences of dysseborrhea

We speak of dysseborrhea when the sebum produced is of poor quality, with oxidation of the elements that compose it. Very thick, this sebum clogs pores and promotes the proliferation of bacteria, and therefore acne. As the function of the hydrolipid barrier of skin prone to dysseborrhea is impaired, it cannot ensure its protective role. Thus, the skin becomes shiny, the complexion becomes blurred and spots may appear.

The causes of excess sebum

  • Hormonal imbalance: Hormonal flows can be the cause of hyperseborrhea, as in adolescence or during pregnancy.
  • Hereditary factors: If in your family there is a favorable environment for excess sebum, it is possible that your combination to oily skin is the result of genetic background.
  • Daily aggressions: The sun, exposure to UV rays, fatigue, stress, tobacco consumption, alcohol consumption... Many factors can be linked to the quality of the skin and excess sebum.
  • Poor food hygiene: Eating too much fat or too much sugar can influence sebum production.
  • The use of certain cosmetic products: Using products that are not suitable for your skin type or that are too aggressive can have an impact on skin texture.

The right actions to eliminate excess sebum on a daily basis

  • Leave your pimples alone!
  • Adopt a balanced diet (fruits, vegetables, etc.)
  • Clean your skin daily
  • Choose beauty products according to your skin type (e.g.: a clay treatment to rebalance excess sebum)
  • Protect your skin from the sun with high SPF
  • Avoid clogging your pores with too many layers of makeup
  • For men, shave gently
  • For women, a consultation with their gynaecologist makes it possible to verify that the prescribed pill is not based on levonorgestrel, which promotes hyper seborrhoea.

How do I take care of my oily skin?

  1. Clean your skin daily to reduce excess sebum: Use micellar water or makeup remover milk to rid the epidermis of makeup residue, pollution, etc.
  2. Moisturize daily to protect your skin: Apply an aqueous mattifying moisturizer to regulate excess sebum and not clog pores.
  3. Purify your skin in depth: Once a week, carry out a chemical exfoliation (i.e. a peel) to eliminate dead cells and promote cell renewal.

What routine for my acne-prone skin?

Here are the best beauty products to treat skin with imperfections:

  • A gentle cleanser that is not harsh on the skin
  • A light moisturizer with aloe vera or hyaluronic acid
  • High SPF sun protection
  • A non-occlusive makeup base

What about home care?

Various DIY treatments can be performed to improve the appearance of combination to oily skin. However, rule out the contraindications with the help of your dermatologist before trying a homemade recipe.
